About

Founded in 1925 by the Fischer family, Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst occupies approximately 90 acres west of Chicago. Our beautiful grounds feature a lake and windmill, providing a peaceful and serene setting surrounded by large trees and lilac bushes.

Beautiful cemetery grounds

Veterans Wall of Honor and Columbarium at Mount Emblem Cemetery Adorned with both flush-to-the-ground and upright monuments, Mount Emblem Cemetery also features a special veterans section, featuring a Wall of Honor. Built in 1932, our Tudor Gothic-style administrative building as well as our Hope, Faith and Charity marble statuary also add to the park's appeal.

Committed to Chicago families

To better serve our Chicago area families, our caring staff offers assistance in both Spanish and English. We are closely affiliated with Chapel Hill Gardens West Funeral Home, Montclair-Lucania Funeral Home and Woodlawn Funeral Home, which are all proud members of the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers.

Our history

Our historic memorial park, Mount Emblem Cemetery, has been in operation since 1926. The beautiful grounds are spread across 90 acres.

The Fischer Windmill

Fischer Windmill at Mount Emblem CemeteryThe administration building, along with the cemetery’s entrance gates and bridges, were designed to resemble English architecture of the 1860s. We are perhaps best known as the home of the Fischer Windmill. Mt. Emblem is the only cemetery in North America to contain a “Dutch Smock” windmill. It was among the first of its kind to be built in the Chicago area, and is the oldest standing windmill in Illinois. The windmill was built when this land was still Fischer Farm. The windmill was refurbished by Dignity Memorial in 2015.

Three pillars

Faith, Hope, and Charity Pillars at Mount Emblem CemeteryNear the western end of our cemetery is the “Mt. Emblem” feature. This man-made hill features a monument of three pillars, symbolizing Faith, Hope and Charity. Originally, Mt. Emblem was a Masonic-only cemetery, however, over the last several decades we have been honored to serve families of all religions, cultures and backgrounds.

We have maintained the policy of using flush markers throughout the great majority of the park. This honors the traditions of the cemetery founders and helps to maintain a tranquil, parkland setting. We will work with your family to design the most appropriate memorialization for you and your loved ones.

All types of options for you

Monument Garden at Mount Emblem CemeteryWhen the St. Johannes Cemetery was relocated to Mt. Emblem due to the O’Hare Airport expansion, a section of the cemetery near the south edge became the new home to a number of granite monuments. For families wishing to have granite family monument, we offer them in this area as well as the “Bench Estates” near the windmill. Mt. Emblem offers a wide variety of traditional and cremation-oriented interment options. We also work with families to design and build “personal” mausoleums for above-ground entombment. Whatever your unique situation and desires, we'll be here.
